"Dancers are the athletes of God" ~ Albert Enstein

We are a dedicated group of dancers, teachers, dj’s and event organisers, specialising in Swing, Jazz, Blues and other authentic dances from the 1920's to the 1950's. We have all been a part of the swing dance scene for many years and love what we do and want to share our passion with you.

ASIF MALIK

Why walk when you can dance?

Asif is a dancer, teacher, performer, deejay and event organiser from London and founded District Swing in 2014.

In The Beginning ... Playing percussion in school bands & orchestras, at many plays & concerts, he was also an active member of a local youth orchestra, which gave him the opportunity to perform at the Royal Albert Hall. Exposed to many genres of music, his favourites were Swing (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, etc) and Blues (BB King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, etc). However, at the time, he was more interested in playing than dancing to it.

And Then ... Fast forward to 1996, reluctantly going to a tea dance because they “needed more men”, he vowed never to go back after stepping on many ladies toes! The insistence of a friend who could “see potential” made him eventually go back. That was it!! Bitten by the bug, he would travel everywhere to dance, sometimes every day of the week!

Starting with Modern Jive and also dabbling in other forms (including Argentine Tango, Ballroom, Salsa, Street), he got his first taste of Lindy Hop at an event that was celebrating a milestone birthday of the legendary Frankie Manning. Inspired by this but having an already busy schedule, he started slowly with Swing but eventually was so hooked, that this became his new passion.

He has belonged to a number of different dance troupes over the years and has attended, performed & competed at many events. He also had the great privilege of being one of the swing dancing doctors in the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony.
